I am Maritza Vorster, a school principal with 25 years of experience and currently a PhD candidate in inclusive education. I hold a Master's degree in this field. Over the years, I have taught at various grade levels in South Africa and the UAE, which has enriched my understanding of diverse educational contexts. I have also held leadership roles in the UAE and Saudi Arabia for the past 10 years.

Good morning, Principal. Thank you for taking the time to speak with me today.

Good morning! It's my pleasure.

Let's start with an overview. As the principal of Royal American School, could you tell me a little about your responsibilities and any challenges you face in this role?

My responsibilities here are quite varied, which keeps things interesting. Primarily, I oversee the daily operations of the school, ensuring that our educational programs meet the needs of all our students. This includes curriculum development, teacher evaluations, and maintaining a safe and supportive learning environment. One of the biggest challenges is balancing the diverse needs of our student population while also keeping up with the latest educational trends and technologies, as well as ensuring everyone knows and understands our schools vision and goals in order to achieve them.

That sounds like a lot to juggle.

On a lighter note, could you share

some moments in your life that

brought you happiness?

Absolutely!
Back in
South Africa
I used to be an
elementary
school teacher,
this was a
wonderful time

in my life, but

what really made

it better was enrolling a blind student in

mainstream and including brail books

in the educational system.

That sounds amazing, the idea of giving people with setbacks an oppurtinity is wonderful!

Yes I was also very happy since this was a big change that marked a huge achievement.

Turning back to the school, what qualities do you prioritize when hiring new teachers?

When hiring, I look for educators who are not only knowledgeable in their subject areas but also passionate about teaching. Empathy, patience, and the ability to connect with students are crucial. We need teachers who can inspire a love of learning and create a positive classroom environment. Also, a willingness to collaborate with colleagues and a commitment to ongoing professional development are essential.

Yes honestly that is very crucial, teachers need to touch the kids' hearts not just read slides. Finally, how would you describe the current state of the school?

Royal
American
School is
currently

thriving.
We have
a dedicated
team for
teachers and
staff, a supportive

parent community,
and motivated students.
We're continually working

to enhance our programs and facilities

to provide the best possible education.

While minimising the short list of long

term issues. Of course, there's always room for improvement, but I'm proud of the progress we've made and excited about the future. Ive also noticed how friendly and kind the students here are.

That's very good to hear Ms. Maritza. I once again thank you for your time and hope the school becomes a better place with you as its principal
