Mystery 2: The Flannan Isles Vanishing
The Flannan Isles are a remote group of rocky islands northwest of mainland Scotland, known for their harsh weather and isolation. In 1899, a lighthouse was constructed on Eilean Mòr to help guide ships through the wavy oceans. Three keepers were always stationed on the island to manage the light, rotating in and out with relief crews.
Around midnight on 15th of December, a supply ship passing the lighthouse noted that both the light was not lit up and that nobody came to greet the ship, which was the unusual to the lighthouse keepers. Upon arriving at port, the supply ship reported this. However, this fact was not communicated to the Commissioners, and the disappearance of the keepers was only discovered as a result of the routine visit by the Lighthouse Tender Hesperus on the 26th of December, 1900.
Everything appeared normal. No changes nor abnormal activities were spotted in the area. It was said that a meal was prepared in the lighthouse, yet it was unfinished, a chair was flipped over, and 2 coats were missing, suggesting the third left without his gear.
The best answer to this disappearance is that the men went to secure equipment or a crane near the cliff during a storm and were swept into the sea, which does make sense in this case. Despite the thorough research done, bodies remain unfound. So, people hypothesized that a fight between them broke out because one of them was always on edge and wasn’t on the best of terms with the rest, it was soon followed by accidental deaths or suicide.
Mystery 1: The Disappearing Judge
Judge Joseph Force Crater was a New York star judge and, who gained fame in the political world. At the age of 41, he was assigned to the New York State Supreme Court and was deeply tied to Tammany Hall, the infamous political machine that controlled NYC through bribery and organized crime.
The case states this: On August 6, 1930, Judge Crater left his home in Maine, telling his wife he had business to deal with in NYC. He returned to Manhattan, cashing two checks worth around $5000. Keep in mind this was in 1930, so $5000 was a huge sum. He also cleaned some personal files in his Office and was said to be invited to dinner with a lawyer at Billy Haas’s chop house. After leaving… Gone. Never seen again.
Some theories claim that he fled or was murdered by potentially political enemies or someone covering up Tammany Hall's secrets. Another theory suggests that one of his known lovers Stella Crater, who was a showgirl tied to the case, allegedly claimed years later that he was murdered and buried beneath the Coney Island boardwalk. 
All of which are bold hypotheses. That said… Without a body, evidence, or even a decent paper trail, the truth remains just as buried.
In a world driven by logic, stories of vanishing people and unexplained events remind us that some corners of reality remain beyond our reach. Whether lost to the forces of nature, victims of human malice, or swept away by something we can’t yet comprehend, these mysteries linger — not just in cold case files, but in our imagination. They tell us that despite our best efforts to illuminate every shadow, some secrets may never be uncovered. And maybe that’s what keeps them so haunting.
